"TURTLE MOUNTAIN HOME"---this piece was created toward the end of June 2018. Originally it was titled "Home." The title eventually changed to "Turtle Mountain Home." I am an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, located in the north central part of North Dakota, through my father's side. I am from the Cut Head Band of Dakotah Sioux, from my mother's side. Essentially, I created this to express what I could not put into words. I was pondering the meaning of home. Everything that happened I began to question the meaning of home. The word "home" has many different and various meanings. A home can be a physical dwelling place, maybe we remember the house that we grew up in, many of us would consider our family makes up a home. And all of those meanings are correct. I essentially came to believe, through prayer and thoughtful consideration, home is where we get to find and experience love, peace, serenity, happiness. That's what our home was and still is even though Geri is no longer with us. I know Geri is home, in heaven and in our hearts.
The turtle represents the character we need to walk this journey until we are called home. The turtle is slow and steady, it keeps the course. The turtle is grounded and uses its experiences in life to make good decisions. The floral pattern surrounding the turtle represents life. The vines connect each different flower. Each flower has its own unique beauty and is distinct. Just like each member in our families. Geri loved flowers so I enjoyed drawing each flower and choosing each color.
Finished a design that means a lot to me. A word that has been going through my head lately is "Home." So this design represents the Turtle Mountains. But it also represents the long and narrow road we walk in life with our families. At some point on this journey we will need help in some way. The turtle represents the character we need to walk this journey. The turtle is slow and steady, it keeps the course. The turtle is grounded and uses its experiences in life to make good decisions. I will have this design on some shirts soon. Thank you, dear family and friends. God Bless.
